What is an Occupational Health Nurse?

occupational health nurseThese professionals are nurses that have specialised in the field of Occupational Health. They have gained further qualifications to allow them to really understand the affects of work on people and indeed how ill health of people affects work. They are uniquely placed to add value in terms of maintaining employee health and wellbeing and thus maximising their overall productivity.

Occupational Health Nurses (or often referred to as Advisors or an OHA) are considered to be leaders in public health in the workplace setting. The occupational health nurse role includes:

  • The prevention of health problems, promotion of healthy living and working conditions in the workplace.
  • Understanding the effects of work on health and health at work
  • Basic first aid and health surveillance
  • Workforce and workplace monitoring and health need assessment
  • Wellbeing and health promotion
  • Health related education and training
  • First level counselling and support
  • Health related risk assessments and management
  • Management / HR support.

Occupational Health Advisors are often the principle or indeed the only health support on site and provide a fantastic value adding service.  In other circumstances they will work alongside Occupational Health Physicians.
